Student Teacher Coaching Programme - 2011
One feature that has been unique to the UK project has been to offer schools the support of a Design for Change coach to visit the school, kick-start the “Feel, Imagine, Do, Share, Sustain” coaching approach and support class teachers through making the shift from “teacher says” to “I can”.
To go to scale we need to attract a small army of DFC coaches for 2011.
We are inviting student teachers to a free one-day DFC Coach training session in return for agreeing to recruit at least one school into Design for Change 2011 and support them through the project.
There are at least two free events taking place – in London and Durham. More events will be organised for educational authorities, or large clusters of schools that wish to take part.
The Training
The one-day coach-training event has been designed by a team of coaches based upon the experiences of the pilot project in 2010, and with input from the Institute of Human Development (IHD), one of the UK’s leading coach training organisations.
Participants will learn how to use the “Feel, Imagine, Do, Share, Sustain” model that sits at the heart of Design for Change.
By the end of the one-day event, all participants will be able to facilitate the start of a DFC project in a school, and will be able to model foundation-level coaching skills to the class teachers that will be working with the children.
For student teachers, this one-day event will be an important, contemporary and cutting-edge addition to their classroom skill set.
The Institute of Human Development will issue all participants with a certificate of completion.
Participants who go on to successfully complete a Design for Change project during the year – see below – will also be invited to attend a free two-day Coaching in the Classroom programme at the Institute of Human Development.
The Design for Change Project
Having completed the one-day DFC coaching day, coaches will be asked to recruit one local school (or more if they wish) into taking part in Design for Change, organise a half-day or one-day session with the school to kick-start the project, and provide occasional email and telephone support during the project.
The experience of 2010 coaches is that this need not be onerous in terms of time allocated – and can be deeply rewarding personally. DFC Coaches will have the choice to work with more than one school, or on more than one DFC project within a single school. (Ashley Primary did one project per year group!)
Registration
During 2011 we will be working exclusively with teacher training colleges and universities. A list of colleges taking part will be added here as they confirm:
If you are a student teacher whose college is NOT taking part - please register your interest with us but we cannot promise to be able to engage you this year.
